Opening General Session and Playnote

04/16/2024 3:30 PM

Compass Rose Ballroom

In my Play Era...

Are you ready for it...? Welcome, camp professionals, to a playnote where the players gonna play, play, play and shake off the seriousness. It’s important to be able to articulate what we all know in our hearts with some science about why “play” is actually so important for everyone, at every stage of life. By diving (not too deep, don’t worry) into the significance of play, and how everything we do at camp can have intentionality and purpose we can make our programs even better (and marketable). There’s no better way to learn than through play, so let’s get this party (I mean conference) started with some good ol’-fashioned icebreakers, games and activities. 1,2,3... Let's go SLC!

Kassandra Wilsey

Kassandra Wilsey, Caili Camp

Growing up with both parents as camp directors, you can truly say, Camp is in her blood! Kassandra graduated top of her class with a Masters Degree in Recreation Management from California State University Northridge (CSUN), with an emphasis in Experiential Education. While not at camp, Kassandra has continued the education of students at CSUN as a part-time lecturer in the Recreation Management Department teaching Outdoor Education, Environmental Sustainability, and Adventure Recreation for the past 12 years. Her energy and enthusiasm for children to learn through PLAY makes her a perfect person to kick off this year’s SLC’s “Playnote.”

The Beautiful Oops: Teaching the Art of Failure

04/17/2024 9:00 AM

Over the years, I have noticed that the fear of making mistakes has impacted staff's ability to perform at their best.  Any seasoned professional knows that it is only through the mistakes do we actually grow, develop, and see opportunity. In this session, we will discuss the art of failure in the camp setting.  Using the work of Amy Edmondson, Brene Brown, and Dr. Sarah Lewis, let's collaborate on how in staff training we can identify the myths of failure and provide staff tools for preparing, practicing, and processing wisely our beautiful oops moments.

World Building Games: Creating Spaces where More is Possible

04/17/2024 9:00 AM

Paradise 2

Play is one of the essential backbones of camp. It’s what we spend the day doing, what we teach our staff to do with kids, and where we find a lot of the joys of camp. Play is also a place where kids can learn crucial social and emotional skills, learn how to work with others, and so much more. In this session, we’ll break down one area of camp play-all camp games, specifically world building games. Games where there are zombies to defeat, puzzles to solve, medical training to be done, and more. All of its imaginary and all of it is essential to kids' development into confident adults who make community minded decisions for others.

Nicole Lauhon, Camp Ocean Pines

Nicole is a camp director who believes in the power of camp to build communities, strengthen relationships, and help shape compassionate and community-minded individuals. And they will remember the things they care about. So let’s get them to personally connect with their training!
